Osmosis Treatment & Repairs
Blisters beneath a boat’s waterline need assessment before a treatment plan is chosen. BrainWaves GRP provides GRP hull blister repairs and osmosis treatment, with the scope based on the condition of the coating, gelcoat and underlying laminate. Based in Warsash, we work with boat owners across Southampton and the Solent.
Blisters can occur in coatings, gelcoat or deeper within the laminate. Establishing where the damage lies helps determine whether local repairs or a broader treatment programme are appropriate. Where needed, the scope can be developed alongside a marine surveyor.

An agreed treatment may include removing affected material, cleaning the exposed area, allowing it to dry, and repairing and fairing the hull. Drying and recoating are planned around the condition of the laminate and the chosen system’s requirements.

Osmosis work is carried out ashore with suitable access and protection. Drying can be a significant part of the programme, so treatment is best planned with enough flexibility for the hull’s condition and working environment. We discuss the repair and finishing stages before work starts.
No. Blistering may affect an existing coating or the GRP itself. Inspection helps distinguish surface coating defects from damage requiring laminate or gelcoat treatment.
Local repairs may be suitable for isolated damage. The decision depends on the blister depth, surrounding hull condition and evidence of a wider problem.
Not in every case. The extent and type of damage determine whether local preparation or more extensive removal is appropriate.
It varies considerably. Preparation, cleaning, drying, repairs and coating all affect the programme. Drying time cannot be reliably fixed from photographs alone.
Antifouling controls marine growth; it does not repair damaged gelcoat or laminate. Any underlying damage needs assessment and appropriate treatment before finishing coatings are applied.
No treatment should be described as a guarantee against every future blister. We discuss the selected system, preparation requirements and any applicable product or workmanship terms for your project.
