Gelcoat Restoration
Exposure to sunlight and the marine environment can leave gelcoat dull, faded or chalky. BrainWaves GRP provides gelcoat restoration for yacht and motorboat surfaces, using an approach suited to the existing finish and its condition. We work across Warsash, Southampton, Hamble and the wider Solent.
Restoration can improve the appearance of weathered gelcoat without automatically replacing the finish. We assess the surface first to establish what can be achieved and whether local repairs should be completed before polishing.
Dull and oxidised gelcoat
Faded coloured surfaces
Local surface marks and light scratches
Flatting and polishing where the finish is suitable

Depending on its condition, the work may involve cleaning, controlled abrasion, compounding and polishing. The aim is to improve clarity and gloss while avoiding unnecessary removal of material. Severely worn gelcoat or deeper defects may need repair or refinishing instead.

We can discuss ongoing cleaning and surface care after restoration. Results and their longevity depend on the condition of the gelcoat, exposure and maintenance. Accessible areas may be worked on afloat, while hull sides or restricted areas may be better treated ashore.
Often, provided enough sound gelcoat remains. We assess the finish to establish whether polishing, controlled flatting or another approach is appropriate.
A light polish may improve an already sound finish. Restoration can involve more preparation and abrasion to address oxidation and surface deterioration before polishing.
Not always. Deep scratches and gouges may need gelcoat repair. Removing too much material to chase a defect can damage the remaining finish.
Yes, where the surface condition allows it. Faded coloured gelcoat is assessed individually because the remaining material and weathering influence the result.
There is no single timescale. Exposure, washing, protective products and the underlying gelcoat condition all affect how the restored finish weathers.
It depends on the areas being treated and safe access. Some topside work can be completed afloat; full hull restoration may be better arranged during a lift-out.
