GRP Reinforcement
New equipment and replacement fittings can place different loads on an existing boat structure. BrainWaves GRP carries out local fibreglass reinforcement and backing plate installation for suitable marine projects. We work across Southampton and the Solent, planning each job around the fitting, its expected loads and the surrounding GRP construction.
Reinforcement should help transfer loads into a suitable area of sound structure. We consider access, the existing laminate and any core material before agreeing the work required.
Reinforcement around davit socket installations
Backing plates for suitable deck fittings
Local support around mounting points
Associated GRP work for bow thruster tunnel installations

The proposed work may involve local core repairs, bonded backing plates and additional laminate connected to the surrounding GRP. The extent and materials need to suit the application; adding glass without considering the load path may not resolve the underlying issue.

Send the equipment dimensions, manufacturer’s installation requirements and photographs of both sides of the mounting area. For higher loads or changes to the vessel’s design, a surveyor or engineer may need to specify the reinforcement. We can then discuss carrying out the agreed GRP work.
Yes, subject to the socket design, davit loads and condition of the supporting structure. Manufacturer information and access beneath the mounting area are needed to assess the job.
Yes. The backing plate material, size and connection to the surrounding structure must suit the fitting and its loads.
Not necessarily. The load path, core condition, fasteners and surrounding structure all matter. Reinforcement needs to address the complete mounting arrangement.
Yes. Supply the drawings or specification so we can review the work, access and any inspection requirements before quoting.
We can discuss tunnel installation and associated GRP work. Thruster selection, positioning and reinforcement must follow the appropriate installation requirements; electrical and mechanical work is agreed separately.
Many jobs can, provided there is suitable access and permission. The need for lifting out or removing equipment depends on the location and scope of the work.
