Delamination & Core Repairs

Boat Delamination and Core Repairs

Soft decks, local movement and damaged sandwich panels can indicate a problem within the boat’s structure. BrainWaves GRP investigates and repairs GRP delamination and damaged core materials in hulls, decks and other cored areas. We work across Warsash, Southampton, Hamble and the wider Solent, with each repair planned around the vessel’s construction.

Understanding the damaged area

Delamination involves separation within the laminate or between the fibreglass skin and its core. Water ingress, impact or a failed bond can affect the panel’s stiffness. We assess the affected area and discuss the access needed to establish the repair scope.

Core replacement and panel rebuilding

Where replacement is required, we remove damaged core and prepare the retained structure before bonding in suitable replacement material and rebuilding the affected skin. The access route and finish depend on the panel, its surroundings and the condition of the existing laminate.

02

Addressing the source of the problem

Repair planning also considers where water or movement has entered the structure. Fittings and openings near the damage may need attention to help prevent the same problem returning. Visible surfaces can be finished to suit the surrounding deck or hull.

Delamination and Core Repairs FAQs

What is fibreglass delamination?

Delamination is separation between layers of fibreglass or between a skin and its core. Its extent and significance depend on where it occurs and how the affected structure carries load.

Can you repair a soft or spongy boat deck?

Yes. We assess the deck to establish whether damaged core, a failed bond or another issue is causing the movement, then discuss the appropriate repair.

Do you replace balsa and foam core?

Yes. Replacement material is selected to suit the original construction and the repair requirements. The damaged area and surrounding skins need assessment before the scope is agreed.

Can you repair the core without removing the whole deck?

Local repairs may be possible. The extent of the damage and available access determine whether a section of the inner or outer skin needs to be removed.

Will the repair stop water getting into the deck?

Replacing damaged core does not by itself resolve every leak. We consider likely entry points, such as nearby fittings, and discuss any sealing or associated work needed.

How long does a delamination repair take?

Timing depends on the affected area, access, moisture condition, reconstruction and finish. We can provide a more useful programme once the damage has been assessed.

Need a GRP or Gelcoat Repair?

Send photographs of the affected area and describe any softness, movement or known leaks. We can discuss an inspection and repair options.
